Re: Affordable Housing for people with disabilities in Alberta
Dear Premier Ralph Klein,
The Self-Advocacy Summit Group is planning the second Self-Advocacy Summit, a conference mainly for people with developmental disabilities. Our members come from all over Alberta. We are writing to you because Saturday, December 3, 2005 is International Day of Disabled Persons. The goal of this day is to help people understand disability issues. Another goal is to get people to support the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The theme of the Day is the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities. As such we want you to know how hard it is for many people with disabilities to find decent and affordable housing.• In Fort McMurray, the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment is over $1200. How can someone on AISH, who gets only $955 a month, find a decent place to live?• The average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Calgary is $655 (in 2004)• Calgary Housing Company (CHC) has a wait list of about 1900 applicants for its 7600 units of mixed market housing (2004). This means that Calgary alone needs an increase of 25% of low income housing units.• In 2004 in Edmonton, the average rent for a one bedroom is $597. That leaves $353 left for food, clothing, utilities and transportation. We want the government to increase the number of low-income housing units by 25% within the next ten years.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Patricia Okahashi, Colleen Huston and Amanda Woods
